Our Story

In 2014 Niekie and Renée Rust purchased Rietfontein Private Nature Reserve from the Veasey family. The most Easterly farm of a range of farms once owned by James Douglas Logan and inherited by his grandson, Major John Buist together with the village of Matjiesfontein, previously owned by the legendary David Rawdon.

The charming historical village of Matjiesfontein is situated at the entrance to Rietfontein Private Nature Reserve, where our 4 renovated 100 year old cottages are often a resting place for travellers, visitors to Matjiesfontein, professionals working in the area and Nature Lovers.

Rietfontein was love at first sight. We are not sure if it was the land with its diversity of biospheres ranging from succulent Karoo to several kilometers of riverine area and mountainous fynbos vegetation, or the open sky, the breeze and the canvas of colours transporting you to this surreal world in the middle of nowhere, where you find yourself under every bush and stone.

For Reneé, a published archaeologist, specializing in rock-art, preserving the Bushman paintings found on the reserve was essential. The Rockart site is unfortunately inaccessible. Niekie made nature his life long partner since an early age. He wanted to preserve this piece of Mother Nature for the future generations. Rietfontein is a world school for the next generations, reconnecting humanity to the earth.

"We regard ourselves as custodians of this lovely part of the semi-arid Karoo, for now, and feel privileged to share it with those who want to enjoy and conserve it with us. We welcome you to this piece of karoo paradise.
Warm Karoo Regards,
Reneé & Niekie"
